Aviation Security (Avsec) officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle dozens of snakes and lizards to Japan via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

A Japanese citizen, Imanishi Yasuke, allegedly tried to smuggle 50 snakes and 10 lizards, all protected animals, on Tuesday morning.

Senior manager of branch communication and legal of Soekarno-Hatta Airport Erwin Revianto said the incident occurred at around 7:15 a.m.

“Avsec officers discovered a suspicious image on the X-ray monitor while checking the passenger’s belongings. His gestures also showed that he was anxious,” Erwin said in his statement on Thursday.

The officers questioned Yasuke and found that he was carrying snakes and lizards inside plastic bags in two baskets.

There were six plastic bags filled with snakes and one bag filled with lizards.

The animals would be handed over to the animal quarantine facility, Erwin said.
