Indonesia’s men’s badminton team secured the country’s first Asian Para Games gold medal on Sunday after defeating arch rival Malaysia 2-1 in a final match held at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Istora Senayan.

Shuttler Fredy Setiawan won against Bakri Omar, scoring 21-6, 21-12.

Malaysia forced Indonesia to play a third match after its doubles duo of Cheah Liek Hou and Hairul Fozi Saaba defeated Hafizh Brilliansyah Prawiranegara and Hary Susanto 21-10, 21-17.

Hafizh and Hary often made unforced errors during the game while the Malaysian pair had a good combination of offensive and defensive moves.

Indonesia’s second singles shuttler Dheva Anrimusthi ensured his team’s victory with his ability to remain calm under pressure.

Dheva, who is currently world number 67 in the SU5 category (upper body impairment), won 21-6, 21-12 against Mohamad Faris Ahmad Azri, who ranks 17th.

His team members immediately rushed the court to celebrate the win, as witnessed by Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi.

India and Thailand shared the bronze in the event.
