Among the many attractive destinations in Indonesia, Forbes Travel Guide CEO Gerard J. Inzerillo has picked five personal favorites that he recommends exploring when vacationing on the archipelago.

Borobudur temple

Describing it as “a spiritual UNESCO World Heritage Site”, Inzerillo mentioned Borobudur temple in Magelang, Central Java, as his first personal pick for the top destinations in Indonesia.

“It is home to the world’s largest Buddhist temple that dates back to the 8th century and was built with more than 2 million pieces of stone,” he said, adding that the sunrise at the place is particularly magical.

Komodo island

Komodo island in East Nusa Tenggara is wonderful, with its lush greenery, natural beauty, pink beaches and clear turquoise waters, said Inzerillo about his second-favorite spot.

“As if that weren’t enough, you can see Komodo dragons walking around,” he added.

Home to the country’s vastest savanna landscape, Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara is remote and secluded with pure white sand, describes Inzerillo.

“It’s an untouched paradise straight out of a movie.”

A popular destination for decades, this island indeed has it all, according to Inzerillo.

“Beyond its natural beauty, there are endless options of luxury accommodations, amazing Balinese cuisine, spiritual temples, rice paddies, beaches, a kaleidoscope of rich culture and most of all, the incredible hospitality of the Balinese people,” he said.

“Despite the notorious traffic, Jakarta is the lively and colorful capital of Indonesia,” said Inzerillo.

“With its burgeoning art scene, it’s an incredible city to explore art, culture and history. There’s infinite malls to explore and endless exquisite dining options. Plus, Jakarta’s nightlife scene is certain to impress.”
