A man has jumped to his death in a river in West Jakarta to avoid a group of people that accused him of stealing a box of donuts, local police have said.

The body of the man, who was thought to be around 25 years old, was found floating in the river near the Cengkareng Drain in Kembangan on Tuesday afternoon.

“A witness [identified as Sholeh] said he was standing near the river [on Monday night] when he suddenly saw a group of people chasing a man, shouting ‘He is a thief!’” Kembangan Police chief Comr. Supriadi was quoted as saying in a report on Thursday.

A rescue team from West Jakarta Tagana recovered the man’s body several hours later, added Supriadi, and transported the body to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta.

The police are awaiting the possibility that the man’s family might file a missing persons report.

In a separate incident that caused public outcry in August 2017, a 30-year-old man was burned alive by a mob after he was accused of stealing three amplifiers from a mosque in Suka Tenang, Bekasi regency, West Java. (vla)
