Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto said that the visit from former Armed Forces (TNI) Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo at his house was merely a casual meeting.
“I receive many guests, both of us have met a couple of times actually,” said Prabowo in Depok, West Java, on Sunday, April 1. He suggests that their connection is limited to a junior-senior relationship, considering that both men came from a military background.
Asked whether Gatot Nurmantyo would later become his running mate in the 2019 presidential election, Prabowo chose to divert the topic of discussion to the general’s retirement.
“I am not quite sure when Gatot will enter his retirement, it could be this week or within this month,” Prabowo answered.
Previously reported, member of Gerindra’s central advisory board (DPP) Muhammad Syafii explained that Gatot Nurmantyo would be visiting the chairman of the country’s opposing political party to declare his candidacy in the 2019 presidential election.
“Pak Gatot will pay a visit to sign up for the presidential candidacy,” said Syafii at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta on Thursday, March 22.
Despite this, he said, Gerindra has yet confirmed its formation for presidential and vice presidential candidate that the party would support for the upcoming election.
Syafii further explained that Gerindra is still monitoring the political configuration that is forming heading towards its registration period. He claims that party is still rallying its coalition to agree on supporting Prabowo Subianto as their official presidential candidate in the 2019 presidential election.
