The 2018 Chooks-to-Go PSL Invitational Conference featured Indonesian-flavored opening ceremonies in honor of the country’s participation in the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games this coming August.
“Our theme is Indonesian because this is one way of welcoming and respecting our Indonesian host represented by minister Agus Buana,” said PSL Chairman Philip Ella Juico. “This is part of our desire to build good will and good relationship with Indonesian people so that when we go to Indonesia on August 18, our friendship has already blossomed.”
Members of the newly-formed Philippine women’s volleyball team, clad in Indonesian-inspired outfits, were given recognition after the usual parade of teams and ahead of the double-header on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
“This is a special occasion because we are honoring the national team (who will compete) in the Asian Games in Jakarta,” continued Juico, who highlighted the players’ dedication and willingness to fight for the flag.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) considers competing in the Asiad as an important milestone because this is the first time that the country will send volleyball representatives since the continental meet’s 1982 edition.
“In 2015, we were very happy and grateful for having put back Philippine volleyball to the Southeast Asian Games after ten long years of absence,” said LVPI president Joey Romasanta. “Now it is so gratifying for us and it’s a fulfilment of our dreams to put back Philippine volleyball to the Asian Games after 36 years of absence.”
The national team, which joined the PSL Invitationals as a guest squad, will first see action against the Smart Giga Hitters on Tuesday.
